Floorwork Workshop

“Physical qualities are, as resources, finite, but the ways we can apply these resources are almost infinite,”

This is workshop is based on a simple premise;
An increase of body control should produce freedom of movement.
This freedom will only be obtained when we start to evaluate and analyze movement for what it is: a mental action, as much as a physical event.  To achieve this, we’ll be studying and practicing floorwork. The very nature of this forms of movement will develop a mental acuity, as well as build the strength and resilience to function in more planes.

What to bring:
- Loose fitting clothing (including something that covers your shoulders)
- Pen & paper
- Something to drink and eat (there are several places to buy snacks and lunch in the area)

What you will learn:

Freedom of movement won’t be achieved by learning exercises alone. Rather, it is a skill which is built upon the understanding of fundamental “movement concepts”. By developing and experimenting the movement concepts below, and combining these into longer sequences, we´re going to establish how we can expand our movement repertoire in a personalized manner.
  • Inversions

    • Inversions are a fundamental acrobatic skill.
      Many of the current approaches to handbalancing consist of stringent techniques and one-size-fits-all systems of progression.

      We’re going to focus on the principles of balance and apply these in a manner that fits the individual, instead of forcing the individual into a technique that doesn´t necessarily fit her/his body, or her/his goal.

      • Headstands

      • Handstands

      • Soft acrobatics

  • Low gait and stance

    • The amount of control we obtain, in any sort of position, should be reflected in our ability to move freely in, out and through these positions.

      In this part of the workshop, we´ll go through an extensive selection of squats and other lower body positions and focus on how the options these movements grant us.  By mapping out all the possibilities available, we can develop mental strategies that let you move closer to the ground, and with greater ease.
      • Squat
      • Split stance / tall and low kneeling
      • Cossack
      • Figure 4

  • Pods and precisions

    • Pods are positions in which your hands and feet are in contact with the floor.
      These include, amongst others;
      • The low/tall/contracted/extended tripod
      • The low/tall/contracted/extended quadpod

In these positions, we´ll establish how you can position your body in such a way that it frees up movement in a specific extremity and move them to specific points. Also known as "precisions".

  • Rolls

    • Execution of rolls depends on an insight into gravity and momentum. Even more importantly, they rely upon on a keen understanding of and connection to body parts we seldom use as bases of support when moving, like the neck, head, shoulders, spine and hips.
      • Forward/reverse head roll
      • Forward/reverse neck roll
      • Lateral/stationary neck roll
      • 180 degree neck roll

And then.. We put them all together.
